We all love to take pictures don’t we? Even if we completely suck at it, taking pictures is something that we all share a passion for.

Surprisingly many people are not aware of how their photos can earn them a bit of cash in tough times, as long as you add them to the right websites. There are a ton of people who need to use specific photos and images on a daily basis, whether they are to be used on high quality websites, posters or online magazines, we all need pictures. The best part about this demand? People are willing to pay for the pictures as long as they have the rights to use them.

How Can You Make Real Money Online From Your Photographs?

There are a variety of different ways that you can make real money online from your photographs and each method that you can use has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages.

For example, some people make money online by building up their photography portfolio and then placing a few ads next to their photos while other people use a simple method of simply selling their photos for use on a few websites. The main advantage to these methods is that you can determine how much money you make online in the long run. On the other hand the disadvantage to these methods is that you usually have to have enough photography experience in order to make the big bucks and to have people that are willing to buy your photos.

In my personal and professional opinion, one of the best ways to make real money online with your photos is by taking advantage of the main stock photography websites that are available today. It is very easy to become a member of one of these communities.

You Can Take Pictures of Anything!

    How It Works

To get started with a stock photography website all that you have to do is sign up for a membership with one of the sites below:

    • Shutterstock
    • iStockphoto
    • Fotolia

Usually the memberships are absolutely free.

Once you have a membership with these sites the next thing that you have to do is upload a few photos that you want to sell and submit them for approval by the website. Once your photos do get accept then all you have to do is sit and wait for someone to come across them and want to buy them. That is it.

How Much Money Do You Make?

This will depend on the various websites. Some websites will offer you a cut of the sale from the photo that was purchased or you can even earn royalty fees after. Of course like I said, this will ultimately depend on the different websites.

As for setting a price for your photos, that will depend on a variety of different factors. Sometimes the payment for a photo will depend on a subscription that the customer pays and in this case you will only make a few cents. However, over time that loose change does add up and it adds up very quickly especially if you upload a bunch of high quality photos that people will be interested in.

Another factor to consider is that some websites will be willing to pay more for photos after they have reach certain levels of downloads by customers. So, for example lets say that one of your photographs has been download (or purchased) over 50 times by different client. In that case the price for that photo will be higher than the rest of your photos due to its popularity.

    Which Photos Sell More?

This depends on what people are looking for today. Unfortunately in this business you have probably learned to handle rejection with a grain of salt and most of the websites listed above may reject even the best photos you have taken. This is not to discourage you from a photography career. It is just that these websites know exactly what kind of images their customers are looking for and yours may not fit that particular demand.

From my experience most people tend to purchase images that they can easily upload somewhere else such as onto their own website or to a cover of an eBook they have written. In this case most people are looking for really simple images such as an image on a white or transparent background. The simpler the image is, the better chance you will have selling it online.

A Few Helpful Tips To Being Successful With Selling Your Photos Online

There are a few things that you can do to ensure that your work gets accepted by stock websites and that will be pictures that clients will be begging to have the rights to. Some of these tips are:

    • Use social media to promote your online photography portfolio such as Facebook, Twitter and even Tumblr. Having your own website or blog wouldn’t be a bad idea to have either.
    • Make sure that you do some keyword research ahead of time so that you can tag your photos with the phrases that people are searching for in Google right now.
    • Make sure that you check your images over before submitting them. You want to make sure they look as great to you as they will to clients when they see them.
    • Try to touch up your photos with editing software to give them a more appealing look.
    • Learn from top online photographers to see if you can replicate their success.
    • Add some photos to be downloaded free of charge. This will help bring in potential buyers and to have your portfolio looked at by thousands of people.
    • Invest in high quality equipment for your work so you can bring in more sales in the long run.

Shutterstock. I actually buy a lot of stock photos from that site so I highly recommend it.

Just follow the instructions on the site. I personally don’t know since I don’t use Shutterstock as a way to earn income so everything should be right there for you. I hope that helps.
